Exploring Africa is a collaborative effort between the African Studies Center at Michigan State University and MATRIX. Funding and support is also provided by the MSU Office of International Studies and Programs and grants from the U.S. Department of Education, which funds the MSU African Studies Center as a National Resource Center for the study of Africa.
The project was created as a solution to the lack of high-quality African resources available for K-12 schools to use. Because these education levels are often the only opportunity that children have to learn about Africa, Exploring Africa hopes to provide the knowledge, activities, and resources for students to gain a comprehensive appreciation of the continent.
The Exploring Africa website, designed and maintained by MATRIX since its creation, hosts curriculum for teachers to integrate into their classrooms, including modules, activities, timelines, and visuals relating to Africa. Teachers can create individual logins for students or create a classroom login in order to access content, activity journals, and more.
