Flint Sit-down Strike

Conditions During the Strike

When the strike was first called, workers and the company were caught unawares (Secrecy of the Timing [audio], Sitting Down or Walking Out [audio], and Shutting the Plant Down [audio].) For those who remained, life inside the plant began (First Night of the Sit-in [audio], Life During the Strike [audio], Burning Burlap Instead of Coal [audio], Sending and Receiving Messages [audio], and A Stockholder Visits Flint [text].) One of the principle issues was simply feeding the strikers (Food Sources During the Strike [audio]) which required support from the community (Store Keepers and Farmers Attitudes Toward the Strike [audio] and How People and Business Supported the Strike [audio]) amid concerns of violence (Flint Faces Civil War [text].) Meanwhile the Company was trying to end the strike (Keeping the Company out of the Plant During the Strike [audio].)
