Flint Sit-down Strike

Community Response

Within the Flint community, there were numerous responses (Community Response [text]) to the strike. These ranged from use of violence (Police Consider and Reject Beating Up Strike Leaders [audio], Role of the Company 'Goons' [audio], and Police Protection for the Judge's Family [audio]) to mistrust (Workers Were Suspicious of Unions and Lewis [audio] and Company Union was Sufficient [audio]) to support (Pay Differences for the Same Work [audio] and A Stockholder Visits Flint [text]). Once the strike started (General Public Caught by Surprise [audio]), many businesses and churches did not support the strike (Flint Journal Labels Strikers as Reds or Socialists [audio], Local Businesses Suffer During Strike [audio], and Local Churches Didn't Help the Strikers [audio]) those some businesses and individuals did (Food Sources During the Strike [audio] and How People and Business Supported the Strike [audio].)
