Budd dated the pamphlet 27 September 1849. An abstract from the opening pages had appeared the previous day as a letter to the editor of theTimes under the title, "Cause of cholera" (page 4, column f).

The Lancet published a letter from Budd in the 13 October 1849 issue. Budd sought to clarify a passage on page 9 of Malignant Cholera.
