David Zuck first read Snow's paper, "on paracentesis of the thorax," while assisting with research and writing of Cholera, Chloroform, and the Science of Medicine. A Life of John Snow. Since we were limited in the amount of space we could allot to this subject in the biography, he decided to undertake a detailed paper in preparation for the annual conference of the History of Anaesthesia Society held in Norwich in July 2002.
