Name:

Our Community’s History

In the coming weeks we will be studying where "we" came from — that is, the history behind how each one of us and our families came to call North Lansing home. The following is a brainstorming activity and homework assignment. This activity will lead up to us sharing with each other in class, as well as 30 students going to MSU on Wednesday, May 31, to construct a web page entitled, "The Otto Middle School Online Museum."

DEFINTIONS:

Urbanization:

Immigration:

Push Forces:

Pull Forces:

After the Civil War, and into the twentieth century, why did people come to cities?

What do cities have that rural areas lack?

Where are some of our families from?

AT HOME ASSIGNMENT:

USE A SEPARATE PIECE OF PAPER IF NEEDED

What place(s) is your family from?

When did they come to this country, and specifically North Lansing?

Describe what you know about early family history here (ask a parent or grandparent!):

Why did your family come to this area (what forces pushed them from their home, and what pulled them here)?

What do you know about your family adjusting to life in Lansing? Was it easy, or difficult?

Please describe one artifact that symbolizes your family and why (it could be from your homeland, from previous generations, or a fairly new item that is meaningful to you and your family).
