Monday,
May 6. The
2002 IWDO Project officially began this morning with a Welcome
Orientation at the International
Center. During this introductory session, workshop participants
met one another as well as MSU participants from MATRIX, Women
In International Development (WID), and the African Studies
Center. The group convened to the International Center food
court for lunch, and afterwards the first technology workshop
began. Although it was only our first day in the computer
lab, participants quickly picked up on hypertext markup language
(html) and successfully created a webpage in wordpad! After
searching for images on the Internet, participants also practiced
inserting these images into their web pages as well. See more
pictures from our exciting first day together!

|
Tuesday,
May 7. The workshop this morning started with a review
of basic hypertext markup language (html) and file transfer
protocol (ftp). After reviewing and critiquing the websites
of several women's rights organizations in the U.S., the participants
shared ideas about the websites they intend to develop over
the next three weeks. After lunch at the MSU Union, Dr. Darlene
Clark Hine delivered a lecture titled "Elusive Equality:
The Political and Intellectual Activism of Professional Black
Women, 1890-1945." After the weather warmed up and the
clouds cleared away, the day concluded with a Welcome Reception
at the International Center. Members of the MSU community
who attended the reception included Dr. Darlene Clark Hine
and Dean Wendy Wilkins. See additional
pictures from the reception.

Wednesday,
May 8. Today the IWDO participants began designing their
web projects. After discussing effective visual design, web
layout, and
navigational schemes, they sketched out drafts of their sites
and began creating them in Dreamweaver. The afternoon was spent
listening to several informative talks from the MSU's Women
In Development (WID). Reitu Mabokela discussed her research
on women in university administration in the U.S. and compared
this with her findings from South Africa, John Metzler gave
a presentation on images of Africa and the Exploring Africa
website, and Jennifer Olson reviewed the Women In Development
website. The day concluded with a meeting with MSU Provost Lou
Anna Simon. Please see some of our other
pictures from today.

Thursday,
May 9. This morning's technology session began with a review
of several women's rights and activist websites. The participants
then practiced making links and inserting images in Dreamweaver,
before moving on to make their
first banners in Fireworks! After just a few minutes, they created
some very complicated and beautiful banners. And of course,
the session ended with a review of the important ftp procedure.
After lunch, the participants heard a lecture given by Dr. Tracy
Dobson on "Women and the Law in the U.S." The first
ever IWDO "Afternoon Tea" was held at the hotel, and
it was a resounding success! Tea, hot chocolate, and cookies
created a relaxing atmosphere where we shared our thoughts on
the lectures and technology sessions. See some additional
pictures from our day.

Friday,
May 10. After
reviewing some basic skills in Dreamweaver and Fireworks,
the partipants spent time in the computer lab developing their
websites. Every person has created a banner with her organization's
name, and
most have a consistent navigation scheme with which to work.
After lunch the women visited Quess Derman's Clinic. And instead
of attending open lab hours this evening, we all went out
to dinner at Jambalaya's Cajun Restaurant. As the pictures
for this evening indicate, there was much dancing and celebration.
See some more pictures from our day
in the computer lab and our evening at Jambalaya's.

Saturday,
May 11.

who cooked wonderful meals from their home countries. And after
everyone

Institute in Lansing in the afternoon.
