The project seeks to capacitate and enhance the teaching of recent American history at the high school level by creating both a physical and virtual network for teachers of American history in Michigan. Expected outcomes include:
- Greater knowledge of recent American history among approximately sixty teachers drawn from Mid-Michigan high schools.
- Increased interest in and knowledge of recent American history among Mid- Michigan high school students.
- Enhanced pre-service training for history and social studies teachers at MSU through the participating historians' application of new strategies in their classes, based on their experience in the program.

Path to the Present is a Teaching American History Project of the Okemos Public School District funded by the US Department of Education in partnership with Michigan State University, Michigan Historical Center and State Archives, and the Michigan Department of Education. The project trains Mid-Michigan high school history teachers at intensive 2-week summer history teaching academies. The teachers will create model curricula and attend follow-up professional development events. The 2007 Summer Institute will be taking place on June 18-June 29, 2007. Participant Responsibilities, Path to the Present, June 18-June 29, 2007: All participants in the Path to the Present Academy must: --- Attend every day of the Academy. Please remember to sign in and out every single day. (8:30 A.M.- 4:00 P.M.) --- Prepare the readings in advance of the session those readings will be discussed. --- Come ready to participate in discussion on readings and content presented in sessions. --- Using Media Matrix, prepare a curriculum project related to the theme of this year’s academy. This can be an individual or group project. --- During the afternoon of the last day of the Academy, present your project to the rest of the group. ---- Those taking the Academy for History 807 graduate credits, please see Professor Fine for additional responsibilities. |
